This is a special page to show the photography projects that were carried out in the Southern Arts region during the Year of the Artist, summer 2000 to summer 2001. The Year of the Artist began on 1 June 2000 and was the largest and most ambitious arts project ever mounted in England with over 1000 artists working in 1000 places nationally. It sought to raise the status and profile of living artists and give them opportunities to take their work in new directions.

A wonderful variety of work was completed in all sorts of places, with a high proportion of the residencies receiving maximum funding. This indicates that photography is popular with commissioners and that artists, including international artists, appreciate the opportunity to make new work during a residency and respond to the stimulus of a new environment.

It is a pity that we have been unable to contact all the artists who did photography residencies. Those not represented here, are of course, welcome to contact Fotonet-South and we will add a short description and images.
